city diary: one day more

Earlier this morning, around 7:15 or so, I was walking up a neighborhood street. As I approached the corner of 110th and Broadway, I saw a large group of African American children (all boys - I'm guessing most were 10 or 11 years old) emerging from the subway. I walked alongside them and overheard one kid ask his friend, "Do you really think he's going to win?" His friend nodded and answered, "He just has to."

From time to time, I have seen little boys like that too, mostly on the train, some a bit younger. Proudly wearing their Obama t-shirts and buttons.

I get a huge lump in my throat thinking that a glass ceiling has been broken for so many Americans with this man. We have so much to be hopeful for, but mostly I think of the children.; 11/03/2008
