Tamar Zinn has been painting away in her New York studio for over 30 years. For most of that time her work changed incrementally, subtly, but always the subject matter was light and space. Whether depicting the landscape or, in recent years, architecturally-inspired compositions - her paintings were cerebral and quiet, but rich.
In Zinn's more recent work (below), the solidity of architecture has given way to a new energy and playfulness. Of her BeBop series, Zinn says that "with irregular blocks of color simultaneously anchored and set in motion, the paintings ... continue the interplay of light and matter that has been a long time preoccupation." It's a radical departure from Zinn's past work. The paintings are infused with rhythm and movement, a kinetic force that the calm light of previous paintings had hidden from view.
The following painting, Arabesque, is part of the Tamar Zinn exhibition opening this Friday, October 10, at the Kathryn Markel gallery in New York.
